Round 1 of the BRSCC Mazda MX5 Championship was a rollercoaster of a weekend and an eventful start to the 2020 season.
After a positive day testing on Thursday, Luff managed to secure a 2nd place finish in Qualifying putting him on the front row for both races. After a brief visit to the pits with an overheating issue, Luff rejoined the group and stuck it on Pole only to have it snatched away seconds from the end of the session.
In Race 1 Luff made a positive start, sitting in 3rd position after the first lap. A bold move around the outside of turn 3 put Luff into 2nd position early on. However, an incident in the early stages of the race, resulting in a trip to the pits, only allowed enough time to recover two more positions before the chequered flag. A disappointing finish but with everything still to play for in race number 2 of the weekend.
The final race got off to an interesting start, with the top 6 cars breaking a small gap to the rest of the field. Conceding one place due to a bad start, and a further two to avoid a collision unfolding ahead, Luff held 5th position for the majority of the race until a red flag brought the race to a holt. Once the incident had been cleared, Luff stormed through the final 3 laps to take a podium finish in the season opener and confirm himself a title contender.
